“Honour” is a thought-provoking novel written by Elif Shafak. She is a renowned Turkish-British author. This book Published in 2012. Book dives into complex themes such as cultural clashes, family honor, and the struggles faced by women in conservative societies.
Honour- Elif Shafak is a story of merely a 16-year-old boy who gets involved in committing grave sin. His reckless decision put many lives at stake. The story revolves around Pembe and Adem, a Kurdish couple. They leave their village in Turkey for London in pursuit of a better life.
Their lives take unforeseen turns as they adjust to their new environment. Novel also highlights the tensions between tradition and modernity as well as costs associated with sustaining rigid conceptions of honor.
This book explores what it means to be an immigrant. How people carry that culture within to a land that contradicts the community values. Honour explores issues of women in a traditional society. More in depth, it covers the irony of what men can do, and what women can’t.
How a son can be put in the place of an absence father to guard the honor of his mother and sister. We come to know how a man can fled with his mistress. Honour also explores a childhood with an absent parent. We also come to know how the adolescence years and the company that he keeps, shapes the destiny of a young man.
For me story get little confusing at times as it deals with a lot of characters and goes back and forth between different time spans, countries and characters. But I always appreciate reading Elif Shafak’s books because of the subjects they cover. Her novel endings are always intense and unexpected. Her novels sometimes based on social issues.
